What is WordPress - simple and to the point

WordPress is open-source software that allows you to create and manage a website without coding knowledge. It runs on a server (hosting) and gives you an administration panel - you can edit content, add photos, and manage the website through a browser.

WordPress exists in two versions: WordPress.org (self-hosted installation - full control) and WordPress.com (hosted platform - convenient, but with limitations). When I say "WordPress", I always mean WordPress.org.

Key fact: WordPress.org is free software - you only pay for hosting (~80-150 zł/year) and a domain (~50 zł/year). There is no monthly subscription for the platform itself.

What is WordPress used for - 5 main applications

WordPress is a versatile platform - you can build almost anything on it. Here are the most popular applications:

1
Business and portfolio website

The most popular use. Presenting your offer, contact details, portfolio, and gallery. Simple, clear, and easy to edit yourself.

2
Online store (WooCommerce)

The free WooCommerce plugin turns WordPress into a fully-fledged e-commerce platform with payments, shipping, and product management.

3
Blog and knowledge base

WordPress started as a blogging platform - and it is still the best at it. The system of categories, tags, and archives works out of the box.

4
Landing page and campaigns

Quickly editable, ideal for A/B testing copy and layouts for advertising campaigns.

5
Portal and educational platform

With the right plugins (LearnDash, MemberPress), WordPress serves as a fully-fledged online course platform.

Pros and cons of WordPress - an honest overview

Pros: a huge community and plugin ecosystem (60,000+), an easy-to-use panel, a free core, excellent SEO when properly configured, scalable from a simple portfolio to a large portal.

Cons: requires regular updates (plugins and core), can be slow without optimisation, needs ongoing technical support. Not suitable for highly specialised web applications.

Key takeaway

WordPress is the best choice for most small and medium-sized businesses - provided someone takes care of it technically. A website without updates is a website waiting for problems.

I offer: building a new website from scratch, redesigning an existing WordPress, administration and technical support, and migrating from other platforms.

Frequently asked questions

Is WordPress free?
WordPress itself is free (open-source). You pay for hosting (60-300 zł/year), a domain (~50 zł/year), and possibly premium themes or plugins. Basic themes and plugins are free.
What is the difference between WordPress.org and WordPress.com?
WordPress.org is installed on your own hosting - you have full control, any plugins and themes. WordPress.com is a ready-hosted platform, more convenient to start, but with limitations on free plans. For a business, I recommend WordPress.org.
Is WordPress secure?
It is secure if you update it. Around 90% of attacks result from outdated plugins or themes. Regular updates, good hosting, and an SSL certificate are the recipe for a secure website.
Do I need a developer to run a WordPress website?
For day-to-day operation - no. After deployment, you add texts, photos, and posts yourself through the panel. A developer is useful for building, major changes, and technical support (updates, backups, security).
How long does it take to learn WordPress?
Editing content (texts, photos) - a dozen or so minutes. After a training session with me, clients are able to update the website themselves on the same day I deploy it.
