Idea

The Mercedes beczka W124 had to be shown like an automotive poster, not a plain car sketch. I needed to keep the recognisable body shape, headlights and weight of the classic model while adding a style suitable for print.

In car illustration, proportions reveal mistakes fast. If the bonnet line, headlight angle or shadow is off, the viewer feels the car is not that model, even if they cannot explain why.

Execution

I started with reference photos and several pencil sketches to set the proportions correctly. I then refined the lines, headlights, shadows and light in the digital version.

The finished illustration was created in three colours: blue, yellow and green. This lets the same motif work as a poster, mug print or T-shirt print, with the version chosen for the recipient.
